Fort Worden Makers Square

Location: Port Townsend, WA
Client: Fort Worden Public Development Authority

Fort Worden, formerly an army base, then a state park, and now a center for lifelong learning, is a 500-acre campus with more than 100 buildings and a dozen nonprofit partners.   KO Projects worked closely with Fort Worden PDA and its partner organizations to develop a business plan for a new campus ‘neighborhood’ known as Maker’s Square.  Maker’s Square will provide nearly 25,000sf of new space for artists and other 'makers' and associated programs.

The Makers Square business planning study blended the business objectives of a sustainable PDA with the long-term health and vitality of present and future partner organizations and users.  This credible, sustainable operating approach for Makers Square built confidence among board and funders in the project’s success and the PDA’s role in programming and operations, and established a framework for future campus improvements.  The project went out to bid in early 2019.
